Hee!
[i]1993 there was a student from the University of London who asked himself why old men – and women – have big ears. Some students agreed with him, others doubted it. They decided to research it; they asked four general practitioners to help them. The general practitioners asked their patients, a total of 206, varying from 30 to 93 years, for permission to measure the size of their ears. The result in millimeters, together with the patient’s age, was recorded. The scientists were surprised by the enthusiasm of the patients. Eventually they came to the simple conclusion that ears grow an average of 0,25 millimeters a year, and that’s, according to the students, why older people have bigger ears than younger people.
However, a London scientist thought this was all rubbish, he said there was no obvious evidence that there was a relationship between the growth of your ears and your age. He thought that older people were raised in a different way than the younger people nowadays. For example, older people got their ears scrubbed or boxed, as a punishment, regularly.
A specialist from Cambridge had another opinion, he said that men with small ears die younger, and therefore there’s a larger population of old people with big ears.
